It's about 62, 63AD. The Apostle Peter is in Rome. The cruel tyrant Nero is emperor. Peter writes to Christians scattered throughout most of what we would call Turkey. Full-scale persecution of Christians hasn't yet broken out, but is coming. For now, those who follow Christ in these lands are scorned, mocked and socially marginalised. Peter writes to remind them of all that God has done for them in the gospel, and of the astonishing status which they have in Christ. He urges them to stand fast in the true grace of God.
